Viktor Ullmann was a Czech-born composer and conductor raised and educated in Vienna. He was active in musical circles including Schoenberg's and Zemlinsky's, composed works influenced by Debussy, Berg, Mahler, and Zemlinsky, and was a central figure in Terezín's cultural life before being killed at Auschwitz on October 16, 1944.
